I agree, the old Club handbook is great. There is also a group on Yahoogroups that is specifically for starting an American Girl Club for educational purposes. They have great ideas on starting a group. The old craft and cookbooks are good to find things to do at the meetings as well. We got the newer Club book, but I think the older one is more thorough and helpful.
We've looked into having a Club also but we've just been too busy to start. Just an idea, if it is going to be a non-profit Club, you can hold meetings at your local library for free.
